In uncertain times, a “well worn but still beautiful and serviceable” collectible trumps a “cheap, mass produced, disposable but fun” plaything. The look is hand crafted, hand carved, and hand finished, but also weathered, timeworn, and distressed. All this is meant to imply quality and high value that has aged beautifully.

In general, the mood of the country is always portrayed visibly in clothing and cosmetic styles closely followed by interior fashions. Which is how the Lipstick Theory of Consumer Spending came into being. It has been noted that when the economy takes a downturn, red lipstick sales increase, probably because lipstick is viewed as a cheap, guilt free means to get a lift.

According to reports, this year’s design trends seen at High Point are similar to last year’s but what was then a tentative toe in the water approach, has become a strong dive headlong into the waters of shaping public opinion by example. There is a certain clarity of desire and direction where there were only whispers last year.
