If a color can represent the mood you are in,

Pantone’s color of the year is Tangerine Tango

Pantone’s pronouncement of the color of the year

is taking the pulse of the country too.

The buzz:

Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Clearly, Tangerine Tango can provide a much-needed energetic boost to home accessories, and by association, the economy, we hope?

Noted in the High Point Report for 2011:

It’s been said that interior design changes its mind about fashion roughly every ten years. The change however isn’t sudden. What was a trickle of a suggestion a few years ago can gradually grow into a present day flood.

From that perspective, the interior fashion progression from last year to this year, is glacial at best, although it’s decidedly more confident than a few years ago when the global markets went into free fall.

The take-away impression of design trends for 2012 compared to 2011 is:

Same drill(s)…just more so….except for one interesting difference.

According to Steve Kincaid, president of solid wood resource Kincaid Furniture, “ They (retailers) are selling goods at higher price points and are here (at High Point) trying to buy product that is a little more expensive and higher style. They realize they can sell furniture in our price range. We are seeing people who have lowered their price points and they are coming back because they are getting requests for higher end products.”

Apparently, optimism and quality rule this year.

In other words, more of same but best of kind.

 

The design trends report for 2011 also noted the following:

Rough Trade And The Luxury Grunge Look: The impetus towards a greener point of view over the past few years has spawned a review of our notions about reclaimed and vintage home furnishings and décor. Some call it The Belgian Look. It can also be defined as looking Repurposed From Some Other Century with emphasis on un-dyed fabric or at least grayed out from age, exposed bolts and steel supports.”

The look is still big. Going even further was a leaning towards “deconstructed”, with pieces not fully upholstered and showing the frame and inner supports. Natural fibers in the form of burlap, grass-cloth and raffia was woven into some of the designs.

This year’s interpretation also gave a slight French twist to the Belgian Look. While there was a range in wood finishes from a darker gray to Belgian oak, all hues were brought together with a washed patina and white undertones.

Along side the old factory/reclamation theme, a renewed appreciation for artisan designed and bench-made goods.

If it’s hand crafted great.

If it only looks hand crafted, still good.


Vintage rules with wit, or a bit of kitsch, or outright whimsy. 2011 saw the beginning of a trend where a “Made In America” label represents the New Chic. This influence made a very big splash in 2011 and continues to grow even bigger this year.

“In uncertain times, a return to one’s roots is the pathway for renewed strength.”

For this reason, it’s notable that most often updated spins on the design trends of yesteryear were either Americana as imagined by Norman Rockwell, or glamorized Americans as with the Mad Men style.

Speaking of which, Mad Men Vogue has definitely staked territory on the home design front.

There was also a nod to Space Age design via the 50’s but updated for today.

Traditional furniture designs will always have their place. To accompany the French Twist influence, inspiration was taken from French Neoclassical designs, then sleeked down in the details. There were still gold embellishments and scrolls that were typical of the period.

Not unlike styling yourself, styling a home that looks like you is never a done deal. Your preference may fall somewhere between “homiest home” to “show-stopper statement interior”, but to truly be a home you love to live in, the idea is to let it grow and evolve over time…or at least look that way.

Let the latest furniture design trends inspire you, but never rule.
